Germany´s fascinating north-east
In Rostock, a city
by the sea and with a river, the water is not just for bathing. All
year round, boats of different types and sizes shape and enliven the
feel of the place. There are the impressive ferries, setting out to
sea daily for Sweden, Denmark and Finland and soon even to Russia,
their hulls stuffed with freight and passengers.
There are the fish
cutters on Warnemünde's Alter Strom (Old Stream), sailing out on tours for
fishing trips, in all winds and weathers. For landlubbers, the safe
view out to the sea from the breakwater is experience enough, while
braver visitors treat themselves to a sea trip.
At the shipyards,
one's glance is held by the big cargo ships or the delicate river
cruise ships, conquering Rostock on a tour of the harbor, for
instance. Passenger boats offer an attractive and restful river trip,
which even visitors not ready for the open sea should try out. The
trip takes you from Rostock town harbor along the Warnow River to
Warnemünde, past the tranquil waterside, to the port, ferries and
shipyards. The
lovely action on the water gets even livelier and more varied in
summer, when sailboats from the Baltic and the Warnow River, large
and small, are out on the water. From ocean giants to luxury liners,
you can also set sail on a Baltic cruise at Warnemünde.
Discover Germany´s fascinating north-east: As UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Wismar and Stralsund will enchant you. Experience the magnificent Gothic Cathedral in Bad Doberan and pass Germany´s oldest seaside resort Heiligendamm by the narrow-gauge railway called "Molli". Last but not least: Schwerin, the federal state´s capital will amaze you with its fairytale castle.
