Potsdam - Welcome
Potsdam
A diamond with many facets
Take your time to
discover the most beautiful sites of Potsdam: the city vis-à-vis to
Berlin has much to offer! Huge parts of the artwork Potsdam were
honored with the title UNESCO-World
Heritage.
First of all, there
is the Potsdam with its Prussian monarchs who left behind magnificent
castles and parks. Right in the middle of it: Schloss Sanssouci (Sanssouci Palace) with its English gardens, the
summer residence of Friedrich the Great.
Then there is the last
castle of the Hohenzollern family, Schloss Cecilienhof (Cecilienhof Palace) in the Neuer
Garten (New Garden). This is where the Allies came
to the Potsdam agreement in 1945, an important event in European
history.
Last but not least, there is the Schloss und Park Babelsberg (Babelsberg Palace and Gardens) that is famous for its
magic lines of sight in a perfectly designed landscape. Enjoy the most
beautiful view over Potsdam's castles and parks from the Panorama
Towers on the Ruinenberg and Pfingstberg mountains
and "Park Babelsberg".
Another facet of the
diamond definitely is the historic Old Town. By foot you can
discover streets, courts, baroque buildings, impressive churches and
an entire Holländisches Viertel (Dutch Quarter). Around this area you will find many more "international" sites
that reveal a piece of the openness Potsdam is so famous for: the
Russian Colony Alexandrowka,
the Bohemian Weberviertel (Weber Quarter),
the Swiss Colonist Settlement as
well as churches and villas with Italian flair.
Experience Potsdam
from a different perspective, Potsdam- the isle right in the middle
of the Havel River.
The river, its lakes and the inspiring, green landscape offer you
heavenly leisure and water sport activities.
Our advice for
your rendezvous of the senses in Potsdam:
Get inspired by the "Nächtliche Schlösserimpressionen" (Nocturnal Castle Impressions): During this romantic moonlight
cruise on the Havel River, magic castles, monuments and churches on the
shore will cast a spell on you.

2012 Birthday Celebrations on a Grand Scale
for Frederick the Great
On no other city in Germany have the Prussian monarchs left such a definitive mark as they have on Potsdam what is today the capital city of Brandenburg, situated on the very doorstep of Berlin. King Frederick the Great played a particular role in this and it is his 300th birthday that is to be the focus of this year’s forthcoming year-long celebrations in Potsdam. The Foundation for Prussian Palaces and Gardens Berlin Brandenburg will be staging an exhibition entitled “Friederisiko – Friedrich der Grosse (“Frederick and Risk - Frederick the Great“) from 28th April to 28th October 2012. The Prussian king also takes center stage in musical events: the Potsdam Sanssouci Music Festivals, which will be taking place in the palaces and parks, will be presenting their program under the banner of “Frederick the Great: Music and Europe” (09.-24.06.2012). And the baroque horse-riding displays to be staged in the forecourt of the New Palace (19.-22.07.2012) hold the promise of a really special experience.
