Today, there are 13 wine-growing areas in Germany with six of
them being located in close proximity to cities of the Historic Highlights of Germany. Each of these cities provides a unique combination of culture and wine and is a perfect destination for those travelers who want to enjoy some German wine and discover fascinating wine cellars, modern wineries and learn about vintners traditions.A tour of discovery through our wine cities enthralls the senses with high-calibre culture and internationally acclaimed wines. The mild climate, mineral rich grounds and the skill of the wine-growers create characteristic wines that are highly recognized at home and abroad. Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) rate amongst the celebrities.

Generation Riesling
Germany's vintners offer you new discoveries: During many events in Germany and abroad the members of “Generation Riesling” project the impression of being young, innovative and open-minded. They are representative of a well-educated, internationally oriented and ambitious younger generation of vintners assuming responsibility within the German wine industry. The German Wine Institute initiated the concept in order to provide younger members of the wine scene – the age limit is 35 years – a national and international platform. It is important to know that this cooperation does not exclude other traditional varieties like Silvaner, Pinot or Lemberger.

Did you know?
An over 1200 year old tradition
During the summer and autumn months you can find these “Strausswirtschaften” along the vineyards in Germany.In these wine taverns the vintners offer their own wines and simple local food. To indicate the seasonal offering the owners hang a wretch of flowers (= Strauss) on the gate.

Since 2010, the German Wine Institute has awarded prizes to "Landmarks of Wine Culture": places which are documenting the history and tradition of wine growing in an impressive way. Good news: Landmarks of Wine Culture can be found in our Wine Cities too:

Wine Samplers on German rivers
The cities on the Rhine, Main and Moselle rivers are home to some of the foremost cultural treasures in Germany. Mighty monuments inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, gentle vineyard slopes that have produced fine wines since ancient times, and rivers, shrouded in myth and legend. Organic Wine "Ecovin"
The largest association of organic vintners, “Ecovin”, was already founded in 1985. Nowadays it consists of 200 members who farm around about 1,200 hectares. The Landmann winery in Freiburg is particularly notable for its organic wines and the local wine festival is a particularly festive time. In order to be called “eco vintner” the wine-growers have to follow strict regulations such as the prohibition of using mineral fertilizers or certain pesticides against diseases and pests.
